The World We Live In

I normally try to keep my posts funny and light hearted, but I don't feel like this post can go without being published.  I tried to write it yesterday, and just couldn't get the words together.  I was still trying to process all the information and deal with it.

Tuesday, our little beach town suffered a tragic day. Events I've only ever watched in the news, in big cities, happened in our quiet, laid back little town.  It also happened literally right down the street from our house, which is a little too close to home for my comfort.

Evil paraded around town and proved that things can happen anywhere, at any time.  Tuesday, a man who spent 25 years protecting our community as a man in Blue, died at that hands of a coward.  Deputy Bill Myers started his morning meeting a gentleman at a local law office to serve him with a domestic violence injunction he was waiting to receive. A conversation regarding firearms prompted the young man to admit he had a firearm in his vehicle.  As the deputy went to search the vehicle the young man then pulled a firearm he had concealed and shot Deputy Myers multiple times in the back with one shot landing in the back of his head.  Deputy Myers was rushed to a local hospital where he sadly passed during surgery.  The shooter fled to the neighboring town and barricaded himself in a hotel room.  Hours went by and gunfire was exchanged, but local law enforcement succeeded in the capture of the shooter who also died from his wounds.

Our community is deeply saddened by the loss of this man.  Nothing but beautiful memories and respectful words have been said about Deputy Bill Myers.  And while I didn't know him personally, I'm incredibly heartbroken for his family, our local law enforcement, and our community.  Although our town is dealing with a tragic loss, I do feel we need to thank him for bringing our community back together.  Watching residents of our town rally to pay respects, launch fundraisers, and protect his memory has been heartwarming in the dark reality of this world.

I'll never understand this war on law enforcement.  This particular incident had nothing to do with racism.  I can't even speculate a logical reason as to why this coward of a man targeted this deputy, not that there would or could be a logical reason.  And while this incident has absolutely nothing to do with me, it terrifies me to no end to raise a child in this dark world.  Things are just getting worse and these acts of violence are so frequent it's not surprising anymore and now, it's in my backyard. What is this world coming to? I'm losing my faith in humanity.

If you have a spare moment today, please say a prayer for Deputy Bill Myers, his family, his co-workers, and our community.  Pray his family and co-workers find peace, and pray our community can rise above evil and our home will once again be that quiet, laid back little beach town.

Rest in Peace Deputy Bill Myers.

  1. This is awful! I too do not understand why people are targeting the very people we call to protect us. A couple of rotten ones do not spoil the whole bunch. Thank you for teaching me about Deputy Bill Meyers.
